Q. How can I upgrade Smarty?

A. The upgrade operation is possible only on Windows based computer.
First at all when you connect Smarty to the computer you don't need to press any key on Smarty, you will use only the computer keyboard or mouse.
Only the first time you have to download and install:

• 7-zip programdownload it from 7-zip web site: www.7-zip.org
• software driverCMD_2.08.24.zip for Windows XP or D30104.zip for older Windows versionsWindows Vista and Windows 7 find automatically the correct driver if an internet connection is available
• SmartyUSB programor SmartyUSBL, for older Windows version. This program doesn't need any installation, just run it

• download the preferred Smarty update file (which has the extension '.7z')
• extract the update file opening it with 7zip program (it will have the extension '.Smt')
• hook up Smarty to the USB port and run SmartyUSB program clicking on its icon, press the 'Send' button and select the extracted update file
  If this fails because of no FTD2xx driver available, then you must go back to the CDM 2.00 folder and click on the ftdibus.cat file, which will prompt extracting the .inf driver file (actually all files - click okay).
  After that, unplug and plug in Smarty again, follow the USB driver instructions and point to the CDM 2.00 folder. The installation utility will find the driver .inf files and complete the driver installation. Now you can click on the SmartyUSB icon.

Q. Why the upgrade files have so complex names?

A. Smarty memory contains 2 different softwares: Program and Data.
Program is the software running inside Smarty.
Data is the software for the ECM truck.Each software is identified by a Version composed by 2 numbers and one character.
For example, Ver. 1.02A means: Version 1, release 2, edition A.
Program and Data versions are shown on Smarty display at power on, for example: 'V:1.22A D:1.07A' where, 1.22A is the Program version, 1.07A is the Data version.
The file names are composed by the version numbers:

V411B Program version: 4.11B
D211A Data version: 2.11A

Q. Can I upgrade Smarty with an Apple computer?

A. Unfortunately the download software tool, used to updated all Smarty of the first generation, for MAC is not yet ready. For the moment the upgrade operation is possibile using a Windows emulator for MAC.
Please contact your Apple distributor for more details.

The Smarty Touch can be updated using an Apple computer as it only needs to copy files from your PC to a SD card.

Q. What are 7z files?

A. Smarty upgrade files are huge. In order to reduce the time needed by the download operation from internet we have compressed Smarty files with a very powerful utility program: 7zip.

Q. What does ' CaTCHER ' stand for?

A. CaTCHER stands for Clutch and Traction Challenger.

Q. What is so special about the CaTCHER?

A. The CaTCHER software is a unique animal. It improves throttle response of the engine greatly. It spools up the turbo sooner. (On average 200 RPM sooner.) It deals with the injection timing. It alters the torque management. Just to mention a few.. Customers report that the engine now 'hangs' on the throttle.

Q. What has Smarty to do with the CaTCHER software?

A. Our Smarty is the tool you need to update your ECM with any level of the CaTCHER software(s). There are ten different softwares in Smarty you can choose from.

Q. What's the difference in the CaTCHER softwares?

A. Mainly the throttle response, or maybe better the aggressiveness of the engine response. Since the full blown CaTCHER develops torque instantly it can become a pain to drive it on slippery roads. Thus the need to reduce the response some.Further more, there are CaTCHER versions with and without added timing stored in the Smarty. The softwares without added timing are useful if you want to use a timing box stacked with the CaTCHER.

Q. Has Smarty only CaTCHER softwares on board?

A. No, Smarty offers SW# 0 that provides about HALF the power of a stock software. Emissions..Ehm..SW# 1 of Smarty S-03 is a Fuel Saver software. With todays fuel prices.. Testing is still in progress but so far it looks VERY promising. MPG gains are almost too good to be true. We will report about the MPG gains as soon as more hard test data flows in. SW# 2 of Smarty S-03 deals only with fuel and boost. SW # 3 of Smarty S-03 is fuel, boost, and timing. The remaining levels can be considered at full title CaTCHERs.

Q. Does Smarty do the boost fooling function? Vmware enhanced keyboard driver download.

A. Yes, all the the softwares in Smarty have modified boost tables in order to allow higher boost without defuelling. (Except SW # 0 and of course Stock) No external boost fooler is required!

Q. Could you take Smarty and install it on several different trucks ONE-AT-A-TIME?

A. Yes! No problem, when you go back to stock Smarty unlocks from the VIN# and ECM. Now you're ready to go into another truck. As many times as you want. The only limit: ONE AT A TIME! Q. Which version of 'stock' will the Smarty come with?

A. Smarty does NOT download the complete original software from the ECM and does not store it into it's memory. That is for a simple reason. The protocol in the ECM does not allow to read the flash memory.
How can Smarty then return to stock? Simple he has all the latest stock softwares already on board. When you choose to return the truck back to stock, Smarty takes the stock software from it's memory and updates the ECM with that software.

Q. Is Smarty's DTC reader also VIN# Locked?

A. No,the DTC reader works always in any truck. Even when Smarty is VIN# locked to your truck, you can still diagnose your buddy's truck. We did not want you to have the hassle to go back to stock only because you need to help someone.

Q. How long does it take to update the ECM with Smarty?

A. We've done some serious research in order to minimize the time needed for an update. We've developed special boot loaders which cut the required time for an update dramatically.
A typical update is done in 1'55' with Smarty S-03 and 3'30' with Smarty S-04! It depend on truck model: for 2007 the needed time could be up to 5 minutes.
Furthermore, we've worked hard in order to have you press as little keys on Smarty as possible. Once you get used to Smarty it takes a few minutes from the moment you plug in Smarty to finish. With the fastest competition it takes more than twice that time.

A. Smarty needs to be plugged into the OBD port of your truck, program the ECM, then unplugged.

Q. If the update is interrupted, how can I recover the ECM?

A. First of all DON'T PANIC! An interrupted update is a piece of cake for Smarty.
Smarty will recover your truck automatically back to the STOCK software. Unlike the competition, you don't have to remove fuses or battery cables. Smarty will handle the situation on it's own. You just need to turn the key on, plug in Smarty and follow the on-screen instructions. A special boot loader does that job. We've done our homework!

Q. Can a dealer detect Smarty?

A. If you take your 5.9L truck back to stock software then the answer is NO! Smarty updates are NOT detectable by the dealer! We've done our homework.
On 6.7L trucks instead no programmer is really undetectable

Q. Does the CaTCHER raise the rev limiter?

A. About VP truck, I can tell you for now is that all the CaTCHER versions alter the high RPM settings in the ECM for fuel, timing, boost, torque limiter whatever.. in order to allow the engine to rev. Depending upon the mods done to the engine that shows up on a dyno graph or does not..

Q. How much horsepower will the CaTCHER add to my 98.5-02 engine?

A. That is the most FAQ of the FAQ's! My answer usually is: none. Those who have followedme through the years or already own a CaTCHER ECM know that I'm kidding. For instance,the CaTCHER deals not only with the top range hp of your engine. The CaTCHER is VERY noticeable from idle up. As soon as you touch the throttle, you will KNOW that the CaTCHER is in there.

I will try to give an serious answer for the first time to this question.

First of all, the power added by the CaTCHER depends upon the mods done to the engine.That makes this question even more difficult to answer. On a stock engine typically we see anhp increase at the rear wheels of about 60 hp. (Is there still such a thing, a STOCK truck???)

With taller injectors the hp gain increases. How much? I don't know! That depends upon theinjectors, turbo, intake , exhaust.. You got the picture. The best mod combined with a CaTCHER is without doubt a good set of injectors.

Fuel pump wire tapping boxes WITHOUT added timing come next if you're after serious hp.In that kind of scenario the CaTCHER becomes very noticeable in the top hp range.I have customers that have gained over 75 hp with that kind of stack above all other stacksthey had tried before. If you have ears..

The most difficult stack with the CaTCHER is with boxes that add their own timing.For those cases we've stuffed the softwares without added timing into Smarty.
Yet, I have to say, we're not taking the full advantage of the dynamic timing the ECM canprovide.
It has been proved many times by now. The CaTCHER stacked with a fuel only box providethe highest hp gain. More than what a timing&fuel box that can't be stacked with anything will provide.

I have Willem eprog programmer, but I was sick changing LPT cable each time I need to reprogram some chip. Also, Willem damaged two chips of one manufacturer. I don't like that small DIP switches too. Also, Willem can't program GAL chips.

So I searched the internet and eBay for some recent programmer. My wish list is small: USB, easy to use, GAL. And I found some Chinese made TOP series programmer. They are cheap, USB and jumper-less. Can they support CPLD? I found one in eBay, won, but didn't pay. Next day I received message from eBay, that seller is fraud and all auctions are cancelled. Also, paypal told that all money will be returned. So, I found other seller with more feedback and ordered TOP2004 programmer again for 49.99 USD. The problem is, that package sending costs from Hong Kong is very expensive- 34 USD. The only good news that American dollars are cheap these days- I love inflation rate of USD. So I payed 218LTL 00 ct. and after about 3 weeks I received programmer. As good Chinese seller wrote in the documents that it is gift and valued on 13$, I don't pay the VAT and customs fee.

I installed software, connected USB cable and everything is working. The only bad thing is that all messages in the software are written in so called chinglish language (like mine ). but I don't care- my English is not pure too. But sometimes I have big smile from pop-up messages.

And now review about the programmer itself…

You don't need power supply for this programmer- all power is drained from USB port. It is jumperless device- all settings are done by software.

Driver Top2004 Programmer Download

First of all I placed some EPROMs from my collection. It was UV erasable and OTP devices. Old and very old. All devices are working. Except two chips, but it is very rare chips: AMD AM27C2048 and Hitachi HN27C4096G… Also, one very old micro controller jumped to EPROM line (AMD D87C51), but programmer managed to read it too. Inside I found some software with 1991 copyright.

Next test point- various flash ROMs from personal computers and other MCU controlled devices. All available flash roms were read, erased and written again.

After flash rom, I tested programmer with SRAM with Liion backup cell. But this programmer can not read DALLAS timekeeper chips- DS1230AB. Also some static cache RAM chips from old computer were tested.

Intel hub chip is supported too- using standard PLCC to DIP adapter.

Serial eprom chips… I have only few on my workbench: ATMEL 24C02, ST 24C04, ATC 93LC46. All working fine. I can adjust the Vcc- 5, 3.3 and 2.5V.

MCUs: Atmel ATTINY2313, 90LS2343, ATMEGA8L-8PU; Microchip: PIC16F84, PIC16F84A, PIC16LF876A – all working fine.

Now time for CPLD, GAL chips. Few lines in Lattice ispLever software and I have fuse map for my GALs. Also, I need to build special PLCC to DILL adapter for GAL chips. GAL16LV8 is working- also tested in my breadboard for proper logic. Tested small GALs from Lattice and NS (National semiconductors). Microsoft office for teachers mac. 20V8 working too. But 20V10 is NOT WORKING! It is bug in current software related to the size of fuse-map. Also, after experimenting with config files I found support for PALCE devices… but it is not working. I hope, that next version of the software will fix these bugs.

After manual browsing I found that this programmer has TTL logic tester. Just plug standard logic chip (74xxx, 40xxx, 45xxx), select chip type and press test. And you'll get message if the chip is working. Also there is interesting feature- logic searcher. Just insert unknown chip and press find. The result is the chip number (or group of number as programmer can not differ OK, normal or high voltage outputs).

I like this device. Just cleanup language, adjust user interface and fix problems with GAL. And maybe enable PALCE and it will be cool device.
Here is the official supported device list from manufacturer's site. But I didn't find Intel hub chips in this list and the device HAS support for them. I just think, that list is not updated.
